genre: IDM (?), post-rave
Hauntology again. Conceptual album about the fucked up pirate radio station transmitting after the nuclear holocaust. A nice disturbing album which covers wide array of cheap post-rave "thang" from bleep techno to dubstep and also incorporating some radio jingles. The naration is provided by Philip Elsmore, who used to be "continuity announcer on Thames Television" (WIKI) in 70s & 80s, who realy sounds like the guy you would believe if he annouced the end of the world. Funnily enough, Mordant Music are associated both with Ghost Box's hauntology and dubstep genre (Shackleton being their good friend a remixer).
(Not on this album, but made at the same time)

Unclassics 55: Erlend Oye - Unrest (2003, Astralwerks) - REUP
genre: indie pop
If Oye had started his career in 90s he would have been a big star. Thanks God, his first albums were low-key folk albums with Kings of Convenience. I never was fan of their music, but when he released Unrest in 2003 I was convinced there was something to him. On this album he collaborated with plenty of relevant people from experimental dance scene starting from Morgan Geist to Prefuse 73 and Bjorn Torske and even though there are some weaker moments as well, his arresting voice saves the day whenever it is needed. Its a shame he then decided to go on creating his nerdy persona and formed rock band Whitest Boy Alive, whose albums I found quite dull. Its too retro and Oye's unique voice is underplayed in their music (which is what he propably wanted.)
Other recommended albums with Oye:
Erlend Oye - DJ Kicks on which he both DJs and sings.
This is the Dream of Evan and Chan (Safety Scissors Remix) - Dntel on This is the Dream... EP (2002)
Last Christmas - Wham! cover on Seasonal greetings — A Compilation of 13 Christmas and Winter Songs (2002)
Remind Me - Röyksopp on Melody A.M. (2001)

Unclassics 60: Noxagt - Noxagt (Load, 2006)
genre: math-rock, noise rock
One thing most people can't cope with in metal is the vocal, that's why instrumental version of metal seemed like a good ideat at one point in time in the 00s. Norway's trio Noxagt created this post-metal bomb which thanksfully avoids anything "proggy" or "moody" - it just rocks. Very hard. You get plenty of hi-energy guitar freak-outs and heavy riffs. Listening to it once again I realized one very important things - this is music you can scream your guts to as much as you wish. Interactive metal with no annoying twerk at the microphone.

Unclassics 59: Mike Ladd - Negrophilia: The Album (2005, Thirsty Ear)
genre: future jazz
Ladd is a white intelectual rapper, which makes him a rare breed among hiphoppers. I do not mean emo-nerdy rapper such as Lupe Fiasco or Kid Cudi, Ladd makes his living by lecturing at university about literature. He made Easy Listening 4 Armageddon (1997) which was ending with an advertisement for an Armageddon and how great it will be. He also formed two bands - The Infesticons and The Majesticons, who released two fake albums with fake beefs aiming at each other. Hillarious. And he also made two albums with NY jazz pianist Vijay Iyer. Negrophilia is a place where jazz and hip hop meet in a way which is not only sophisticated but also "poetic". (No, this is not Guru's awful Jazzmattaz either.)

genre: rnb
I know I use the world demented quite often, but here we go again - Kissey Asplund's album Plethora cant be described in any other way than "demented rnb". There were plenty of experimental rnb album lately (Spacek, PPP, Tiombe Lockheart), but this one beats them all. Swedish singer hooked up with french team PapaJazz and it was released on UK label - strange, aint? If you love Erykah Badu, you ought to listen to this album as well. This is a real alien soul.

Unclassics 57: David Torn - Prezens (ECM Records, 2007)
genre: avant-garde jazz
Sometimes I wonder where could I get some I albums I listen to. Like this one. This is hardly anything I usually want to listen to on lazy afternoons, but it blew my mind completely and was on heavy repeat at one time of my life. According to wiki David Torn is "is an American composer and guitarist. He is known for the organic blending/manipulation of electronic and acoustic instruments and performance techniques that have an atmospheric or textural quality and effect, along with a particular harmonic richness." OK, but this does not tell you that with this album you get heavy freak out jazz with some electronic bleeps included. He seems to be doing more soundtracks than studio albums recently, but this one rules.
Sorry, the video has quite bad sound quality and is only for informative purposes.

Unclassics 56: William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops I-IV (2002 - 2004, 2062)
genre: ambient
The story of this album is well known, so just a quick recap: Basinski found some of his old ambient recordings he made in 80s and wanted to digitalize them. What he found was the sound of time itself as the recordings slowly decayed and started to disappear from the tape. The loops are simple, but the real magic comes with the small changes, mistakes and damages destroying the sound itself. Sometimes the sound gets burried, sometimes only one channel plays and sometimes you hear only hisses on the verge of silence. This is a really powerfull lesson in mortality of all things, just like the old loops of William's, our lives too will slowly disintegrate and then disappear into silence. Heavy stuff. Nearly makes me cry.
For obvious reasons, only first album is included in the dl.

Unclassics 54: Neurosis & Jarboe - Neurosis & Jarboe (Neurot, 2003)
genre: experimental metal
Neurosis are thinking metal fans Metallica, by which I mean they make interesting music, push boundaries and never sold out. They made plenty of great albums, most of them already in the 90s, but the one I should listen to immediately is colabo with ex-Swans keyboardist & vocalist Jarboe. Why? Because she balances the metal machist pose, this dick wanking guitar style with her womanhood. She reminds me of a witch - I must stress out that this is something positive - who controls the testosteron driven metalists and mades them do whatever she wants. Fantastic album, I never wanted to make the chart of 00s, but this one would be near the top (supposing the top would be big enough for like 50 albums)

Unclassics 53: The Focus Group - Hey Let Loose Your Love (Ghost Box, 2007)
genre: ambient, hauntology, Musique concrete
Thanks to "hauntology" thing the Ghost Box from Edinburgh became the hip label for all the intelectuals, theoreticians and Derrida reading folks (me being one of them, right). The conceptual theories behind their songs (library music, old radio broadcasts, acettate vinyl, advertisement music etc.) is cool, but the music itself is very pretty and delicate. I must admit the albums kind of blur into each other, but the sophomore album by The Focus Group seems to be the essential listen. The reason might be the fact that the guy behind TFG - Julian House is also a founder of the label and the designer who creates the magnificient covers.
from Phenomena and Occurrences DVD

Other Recommended albums from Ghost Box label:
[gbx007] belbury poly - the owl's map
[gbx003] belbury poly - the willows

Unclassics 52: El Guincho - Alegranza (2007, XL/Toung Turks)
genre: tropicalia, salsa
Tropicalia revival in middle 00s might be re-dressed nostalgia after psychedelic music and exotica, but after listening to Os Mutantes for the first time plenty of people realized the psychedlic music is not western white rock thing (with George Clinton and his bands added as black tokenism). After all the fuss Os Mutantes reformed and went on world tour (I sadly missed them) and they even released a new album a month ago (not very good, sorry). But the real tropicalia thing from our times was El Guincho's Alegranza. He mixed the original demented salsa beat with hip hop and techno and created a psychedelic masterpiece. I was released on Young Turks and later on XL, but perhaps should have gotten more applause from people like you.

Unclassics 51: Double Leopards - Halve Maen (Eclipse, 2003)
genre: dark ambient
This is some scary shit, really. Outterspace dark ambient that should not be mixed with LSD. At time soothing and sometimes new age-like, but mostly dark as hell with sounds you do not want to know how they were made. I tried to listen to it once before falling asleep and it wasnt a good idea at all. Like spending night at hounted house. But the scary factor is not the only pleasure you get from listening to this double album, I hardly ever get ambient so varied and creative. Maya Miller & Mike Bernstein from this band later formed Religious Knives, more straighforward noise rock (check at least their great album Resin on No Fun Productions).

Unclassics 50: Closer Musik - After Love (2002, Kompakt)
genre: minimal
It would be difficult to imagine "dance" music of 00s without Kompakt label.
Duo Matias Aguayo & Dirk Leyers known as Closer Musik released a few singles and this album and then they went their own ways. Aguayo still makes amazing music. Check his Are You Really Lost LP or this year's Walter Neff single. He in fact last year made a single called Minimal, in which he denonced the whole genre singing "the music had no groove, had no balls, it was just pumping pumping...". After Love is minimal house that was still creative, with plenty of glitch elements and soul samples. Aguayo's soulful vocals on majority of songs bring human element to the raw techno beat. Closer Musik had the same importance for minimal as for the "pop techno" genre with people like Barbara Morgenstern, Ellen Allien or Apparat.
Other recommended albums on Kompakt:
Superpitcher - Here Comes Love, 2004
Matias Aguayo - Are You Really Lost, 2005
Kaito - Hundred Million Love Years, 2006
The Field - From Here We Go Sublime, 2007
Michael Mayer - Immer 2
and Total 6 & Pop Ambient 3
and plenty of minimal singles. This label is all about singles, right.

Unclassics 49: Cassetteboy - Dead Horse (Barry's Bootlegs, 2005)
genre: comedy, mashup
Do you remember one very old Simpsons episode in which Homer rocks to the remix of presidential speech (not sure, which president, possibly Clinton). Mike and Simon from Essex are Cassetteboy and in their own words they do this: "Basically we record famous people and make it sound like they're talking about sex or drugs. It's a winning formula." Their albums are hillarious fun. On this one you can find plenty of re-cut radio broadcasts, politician speeches and also famous pop songs cut up in a ridiculous way. For example: you'll hear Dido singing "I'm shit and I always will be". Most of the jokes are pretty juvenile with tits, cocks everywhere, so free your inner teenager and enjoy.
You do not have to download the whole album, just listen to the youtube example below where Harry Potter audio books gets proper treatment. You'll find yourself rolling on the floor laughing very quickly.

Unclassics 48: TTC - Ceci n'est pas un disque (2002, Big Dada)
genre: hip hop
I wrote couple articles about french hip hop movement during the years. Everything about the scene is very fascinating, but the music, which I found mostly dead boring. The only exception is TTC. These guys are really crazy and entertaining, starting with their names - noone can beat names like Orgasmic and Teki Latex. This is their first album, which was released on Big Dada. This is of course no coincidence - this is futuristic/experimental hip hop this label was known for in early 00s. Of course I cant understand a word they say (apart from few "merdes" now and then), but the music is great fun. The other albums are not bad, just as plenty of side projects they made (Para One beat mixtapes are very cool), but the first one is the best.

Unclassics 47: Anti Pop Consortium - Arrythmia (2002, Warp)
genre: hip hop
It was very difficult deciding which album by APC choose. This one or Tragic Epilogue from 2000? Then I realized Arrythmia has a track in which the guys rap into ping pong ball jumping up and down, which solved the case forever. APC mix hip hop with experimental IDM beats in a way which seems to be very natural (=not pretentious). And they are killer rappers as well. (I saw Beans once live and he blew my mind.) When this album was released it was a good time for experimental hip hop, so it did not get enough props it deserved. And APC disbanded. The are back now with their new album just out. I dont know, I love them beyond grave, but the things they did in the early 00s are just too great to beat. And I will always claim this album to be one of the best ever made. No, really.

Unclassics 46: Maja Ratkje - Voice (Rune Grammofon 2002)
genre: experimental, noise
Norwegian artist Maja Ratkje created plenty of interesting records either alone or with Fe-mail, Spunk or various colabos. Voice is her solo debut on which she mainly uses her voice. In a very demented way, I should add. Get ready for some experimental shit which borders on noise and pure avant. If you really like it, you are either fucking elitist or you should probably stop smoking weed (OK, both is true for me).

Unclassics 45: Metro Area - Metro Area (Environ, 2002)
genre: nu-disco, house
Morgan Geist released a compilation called Unclassics, so he deserves to be mentioned here. OK, he would have been namechecked even if this was called differently, cause he made a few notable contributions to the great disco revival of 00s. With Metro Area and the above mentioned compilation he perusaded people that this retro sound might be cool again and in fact started the whole thing of re-interpreting the maligned genre called disco. No more ABBA or Bee Gees, 70s disco history has been retold again going back to its deep deep gay gay roots. I wrote a lot about this shift, which in my opinion was one of the greatest things made possible by the internet revolution. The album collects various singles of Metro Area released during late 90s and early 00s. They never did anything else together, apart from Fabric mix. Fortunately Geist still makes great music and runs the great Environ label.
Other recommended albums from Environ:
Kelley Polar - Love Songs Of The Hanging Gardens (2005)
Daniel Wang - Idealism 2005
Various - Unclassics 2004
Morgan Geist - Double Night Time (2008)

Unclassics 44: Keith Fullerton Whitman - Playthroughs (2002, Kranky)
genre: ambient
Mr. Whitman (not Walt, though) made some demented breakcore under the moniker Hrvatski, but under his own name perfected his version of electronic ambient. The album was released on Kranky which slowly but surely became the best ambient/space music labels of 00s. Playthroughs is very meditative album, I suspect Whitman wanted this to be very "krautrocky", very Cluster-like, but he failed. But it is a magnificient failure! :) The essential ambient album of 00s.

Unclassics 43: Fog - Ether Teeth (Ninja Tune, 2003)
genre: demented folk, hip hop
I very clearly remember listening to one Fog album and not being sure if I like the music or hate it. Later on after encountering noise and other extreme genres, I found out that the very questioning of your taste is very positive thing, which tells you a lot not about the music itself, but about yourself - which is why we should listen to the music, right? In 03 Fog was just Andrew Broder from MI and his guitar, tape recorder and hash pipe (I guess) and he made this weird record that wants to set your world on fire. Some melodies he plays are absolutely sweet, but he manages to make them even better by lyrics written on drugs and fucking with tape manipulations and adding demented sounds. Just like with Beck, the other albums are just too sophisticated. I beg he made this one without much thinking, which is always the best for this type of music.

Unclassics 42: DJ Scotch Egg - Drumized ( Load Records, 2008)
genre: chiptunes
Chiptunes hardcore was a really crazy fad. Well, when you had Malcolm McLaren in Wired ranting about "Nintendo becoming the next guitar", everyone had to admit this had been a fad. There must be hundrets of hardcore nerdz who dedicate their entire life to re-wiring their old Nintendo and never got laid, drunk or stoned and still live their life quite happily, but I hope never to meet them. I dont know much about DJ Scotch Egg (he was in Prague some time ago, wasn't he?), but somehow the fact that he is Japanese seems very appropriate when you listen to his album. The other chiptunes guy I dig is Quarta303 (yes, the one who did remix of Kode9 Nine Samurai on Hyperdub) and he is of course also Japanese. Drumized was in fact released on Load Records alongside noise/hardcore acts such as Prurient, Hospitals or Lightning Bolt, but hey, this is propably the closest any chiptunes shit managed to get to mainstream.

Unclassics 41: !!! - Louden Up Now (Touch and Go/Warp, 2004)
genre: punk-funk revival
Which band calls itself by three exclamation marks? The one whose career is one big fuck you. The punk-funk revival in the middle of 00s seemed to be fun until I read Simon Reynolds book Rip It Off about post-punk and got hold of the originals. In the retrospect !!! are tolerable and this album might be the strongest one of the whole "movement". Unfortunately they never ever came close to the perfection of Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story), but a few bands of 00s did :) If you want more fun(k) and less politics, try their side project Out Hud.
Other recommended punk-funk revival albums:
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Foals - Antidote
Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
The Rupture - Echoes

Unclassics 40: EARTH - Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method (2005, Southern Lord)
genre: drone metal, country
Dylan Carlson invented drone metal, then he went through hell of drug addiction and returned in early 00s thanks to his admirers on Southern Lord. Hex doesnt sound as raw and heavy as his early EARTH albums, but that's of course a great achievement. Where do you wanna go after album called Low Frequency Edition? Dylan chose to explore the roots of rock and ended up with sounding country. Make no mistake, this is no fucking MOR country with Nashville guys with funny hats, this is raw as fuck country dug from the soil of American soul. Enjoy, this is one of the only three (i guess) country albums on my list :) (Sorry Garth Brooks, you didnt make it!) PS: Special dedication to my dear brother-in-law who plays this album every time we get stoned.

Unclassics 39: Go Home Productions - MashUps vol.1 & 2 (bootleg, 2003)
genre: mashup
The mashup fever was possible because the internet became the Celestial Jukebox once the Napster (and its clones) was born. All songs ever made could be heard at any given time. This made some people wonder what would happen if all our favourite musicians from different times (all at their personal peaks) got together and created songs. Internet just as mashup made this illusion of utopia, where there is no time or space or even money involved. My theory is that the internet was the last space of freedom and majority of interesting things came out of this in 00s and the creative energy can be still seen around the internet. Why do I use the past tense? You know, government and corporations are going to kill this freedom very soon, just like every other. And what are we going to be left with? This compilation for example in which Charlatans jam with Michael Jackson and Joy Division replace dead Curtis with Missy Elliott. What a ride this is! In 03 people like me and Go Home Productions believed that the future of pop is a bright place, however the greedy corporations killed everything with their property rights etc. Mashups turned into the novelty hits (last summer's hits nobody wants to hear again) and the scene got extremely boring and predictable. Mr. GHP even released a mashup album on EMI, which bombed. What an irony.

Unclassics 38: The Caretaker - Persisten Repetition Of Phrases (V/Vm, 2008)
genre: ambient
Dreamy soundscapes of old, forgotten songs as if fading in the background with gramophone hisses and cracks becoming louder and louder. This is pure magic and should be enjoyed as such. Most of Caretakers albums are free for download on the internet - the lastest being recollected memories from the museum of garden history (here: http://brainwashed.com/vvm/micro/vukzid/vukzid09.html).

Unclassics 37: Robert Wyatt - Cuckooland (Domino, 2003)
genre: singer/songwriter
I was reading Simon Reynolds' remarks on post-punk in Totally Wired and I totally loved what he has to say about Robert Wyatt. To post-punk generation he was something like a grandfather being ex-member or psychadelic legends Soft Machine and political lector to likes of Gang Of Four or Scritti Polliti. However, he survived the post-punk years and in our decade, turning 60 he created two of his late masterpieces - Cuckooland and Comicopera (his greatest album is of course Rock Bottom that he made in 1974). Reynolds claims Wyatt is the enbodiement of anti-rock spirit, which goes through the history of popular music and cant agree more. Even the fact that he made his best albums (and one of the best albums of our decade) in his late years supports this, rockers never age gracefully - this man did. (I chose Cuckooland, because Comicopera got its classic status by being selected to best album of 07 in Wire, right).

Unclassics 36: Oneida - Happy New Year (Jagjaguwar / Brah, 2006)
genre: psychedelic rock
During the second half of 00s, Brooklyn became an epicentre for all things weird in rock music. Hundreds of white beardy hippies just dropped-out from art university formed bands and thought they can take drugs to make music to take drugs to (thanks Spiritualized). It's much more fun listening to them live and Oneida proved this on their concerts in Prague, but headphone listening to their records also has certain charm. Happy New Year is a fast forward ride through the history of modern psychedelia from folk, 70s psychedelic freakouts through kraut and disco grooves. Join in.

Unclassics 34: Spring Heel Jack - Disappeared (Thirsty Ear, 2000)
genre: drum'n'bass
I cared a lot about drum'n'bass during 90s, but with the advent of garage at the end of decade, I stopped. From time to time I check at the dnb forums just to see what is happening and end up dl some albums, which sadly justify my position that the genre is already over. (Sorry, Hospital Records never did much to me). Spring Heel Jack's Disappeared might be one of the last albums I ever cared for from 00s dnb. I can imagine John Coxon and Ashley Wales tried very hard to make the breakbeat formula sound interesting again, but thanks god this doesnt show. It is in fact very easy-going collection which does the same things plenty other people on Ninja Tune tried at the same (fusing sophisticated jazz and funk with dnb), but only SHJ - as far as I know - succeeded.

Unclassics 33: Valerio Cosi - Heavy Electronic Pacific Rock (Digitalis Records, 2008)
genre: jazz
Imagine free jazz that is not aggresive, but at the same time hypnotic and soothing. Cosi obviously sees himself as a krautrock descendant (see the song: "Proud To Be Kraut"), but he is also into european improv and po-mo jazz of Evan Parker and company. All together this makes a very heavy mixture of future jazz "head music". I came across this album after a review in Wire and it blew my mind during a long bus trip. Sorry to the person sitting next to me, it must have been a weird experience listening to Cosi's demented and heavy processed sax loops via very loud headphones in my ears.

Unclassics 32: Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (2000, Kranky)
genre: post-rock
OK, I know: this album is hardly UNCLASSIC as it is pure CLASSIC acknowledeged by anyone from Wire and Pitchfork to your educated friends (providing they live in a civilized world, of course). After 10 years of tedious bullshit post-rock by bands like Pelican or 65daysofstatic, it is easy to forget how revolutionary GYBE sounded back in 00. Long pieces or movements never structured like traditional guitar rock with elements borrowed from classical music and film scores, their music unfolded like a novel, but it needed repetitive listen to grasp all the small nuances. This was new rock that threatened the old rock, but then hundreds of epigons chose to repeat the method over and over and spoiled all the fun. OK, there was never much fun in post-rock, but still...

Unclassics 31: Diplo - Favela On Blast (2004, mixtape bootleg)
genre: baile funk
One of the greatest epiphanies of western popular music in 00s was the discovery of scenes hidden from the usual etno-music radars. Wild dance scenes like baile funk in poor areas of Brazil City reminded the westerners that the spirit of dance music and hip hop lives all around to world thanks to the availability of cheap electronic equipment. Baile funk is best enjoyed when you get yourself some drinks and try to forget you have to live your shitty life in central boring Europe. There were actually some earlier and thus more relevatory comps of baile funk (especially those on Man Recordings - http://www.manrecordings.com/), but I wanted to give props to Diplo who continues to satisfy my music tastes with his explorations of the musical scenes in "third" world. He is no Paul fucking Simon, mind that and this is no world fucking music. Get that? OK, now enjoy the music.
Other recommended albums/singles by Diplo:
Diplodocus - "Newsflash" SP (2003)
Diplo Rhythm (2004)
Piracy Funds Terrorism (with M.I.A.) 2004
Major Lazer - Guns Don't Kill People...Lasers Do, 2009
Favela Strikes Back (2005)
Top Ranking: A Diplo Dub (with Santogold) (2008)
M.I.A. - Kala (2008)
