Unclassics 31: Diplo - Favela On Blast (2004, mixtape bootleg)

genre: baile funk

One of the greatest epiphanies of western popular music in 00s was the discovery of scenes hidden from the usual etno-music radars. Wild dance scenes like baile funk in poor areas of Brazil City reminded the westerners that the spirit of dance music and hip hop lives all around to world thanks to the availability of cheap electronic equipment. Baile funk is best enjoyed when you get yourself some drinks and try to forget you have to live your shitty life in central boring Europe. There were actually some earlier and thus more relevatory comps of baile funk (especially those on Man Recordings - http://www.manrecordings.com/), but I wanted to give props to Diplo who continues to satisfy my music tastes with his explorations of the musical scenes in "third" world. He is no Paul fucking Simon, mind that and this is no world fucking music. Get that? OK, now enjoy the music.
