Unclassics 59: Mike Ladd - Negrophilia: The Album (2005, Thirsty Ear)

genre: future jazz

Ladd is a white intelectual rapper, which makes him a rare breed among hiphoppers. I do not mean emo-nerdy rapper such as Lupe Fiasco or Kid Cudi, Ladd makes his living by lecturing at university about literature. He made Easy Listening 4 Armageddon (1997) which was ending with an advertisement for an Armageddon and how great it will be. He also formed two bands - The Infesticons and The Majesticons, who released two fake albums with fake beefs aiming at each other. Hillarious. And he also made two albums with NY jazz pianist Vijay Iyer. Negrophilia is a place where jazz and hip hop meet in a way which is not only sophisticated but also "poetic". (No, this is not Guru's awful Jazzmattaz either.)

I wasn't aware of this album - so surprisingly different to Majesticons. One can hardly believe that it's even possible to come from the same author.

ps. thank's for the post and lot of props for the blog:)
