Unclassics 55: Erlend Oye - Unrest (2003, Astralwerks) - REUP

genre: indie pop

If Oye had started his career in 90s he would have been a big star. Thanks God, his first albums were low-key folk albums with Kings of Convenience. I never was fan of their music, but when he released Unrest in 2003 I was convinced there was something to him. On this album he collaborated with plenty of relevant people from experimental dance scene starting from Morgan Geist to Prefuse 73 and Bjorn Torske and even though there are some weaker moments as well, his arresting voice saves the day whenever it is needed. Its a shame he then decided to go on creating his nerdy persona and formed rock band Whitest Boy Alive, whose albums I found quite dull. Its too retro and Oye's unique voice is underplayed in their music (which is what he propably wanted.)

Other recommended albums with Oye:
Erlend Oye - DJ Kicks on which he both DJs and sings.
This is the Dream of Evan and Chan (Safety Scissors Remix) - Dntel on This is the Dream... EP (2002)
Last Christmas - Wham! cover on Seasonal greetings — A Compilation of 13 Christmas and Winter Songs (2002)
Remind Me - Röyksopp on Melody A.M. (2001)
